Tracking the Geographic Origins of Mourning Doves Mourning Doves are the most hunted migratory game bird in North America. Emad Hazboun is leading the first research of its kind on this species in North America, using hydrogen stable isotope analysis of Mourning Doves wing feathers to determine the geographic origin of harvested doves. He began this research in 2023 under the supervision of Western University scientist Dr. Keith Hobson, one of the first to pioneer the use of this approach to investigate the geographic origin of migratory birds. The study found that doves taken in the southern U.S. states were mostly from local population, while those harvested in Southern Ontario originated from farther northern regions of Ontario. These findings help fill critical knowledge gaps and support wildlife managers in developing targeted conservation strategies to ensure the long-term sustainability of Mourning Dove populations Emad dedicates this research to the memory of Dr. Hobson— a mentor, friend, and a pioneering scientist—whose legacy continues to shape the field. His scientific fingerprints will endure in future studies and inspire generations of researchers to come.
